About the Project:
Jonathan B. Toro, in concert with The Nuyorican Poets Cafe Founders Archive Project (NPCFAP), founded in 2015 by one the cafe’s founders, Lois Elaine Griffith, launched a website in 2023 to reply to the lack of accessible resources on the Nuyorican Poets Cafe founders. The website aims to create a comprehensive digital archive of the founders’ cultural contributions and to illuminate a pivotal part of the New York Afro-Caribbean culture, history, and experience–one that was and continues to be absent and ignored, both in the digital milieu and American cultural discourse. In this vein, the website seeks to preserve and share the founders’ legacy, foster community engagement, offer archival resource and educational resources, and to prompt creativity and discuss. By celebrating and recognizing the cafe founders’ contributions, and conserving them digitally, the website’s objective is to be a vital resource (both personally and educationally) for all generations.
