The digital humanities project Knowing the Ghetto aims to capture, through the production of datasets and subsequent visualizations, the scale of ghettoization and the variations in what ghettos looked like during the Holocaust. Beginning with a case study of ghettos in the Lublin district of the German-occupied General Government (located in current-day Eastern Poland), we will produce datasets placing key attributes of the ghetto in dialogue with the meaning of ghettos for victims and perpetrators as illuminated through their decision-making. In the first year-long phase of this project, we will develop a database schema for the project and draft a research article on the process of designing a database that balances micro- and macro-scale perspectives on ghettoization.
