About the Project
“Introduction to Classical Cultures” is a video-podcast series about the classics that will be produced by scholars in the field, and will feature motion-graphic design in an effort to update the discipline and be used as a pedagogical tool to replace both documentary DVDs and poorly made (and inaccurate) YouTube videos. The series will highlight three Greek authors and three Latin authors, serving as an introduction and a supplement to survey courses in classical cultures.
The series’ motion-graphic videos facilitate the memorization and understanding of convoluted plots, unfamiliar names, and complicated arguments, making some of the oldest stories more accessible to a wider public with the latest state-of-the-art technology. It will be freely available on YouTube as an open-access resource, serving a democratic purpose that that undermines the prejudice of elitism in classical studies. At the same time, it will promote CUNY to a larger public and enhance its online visibility. At the moment, CUNY has 516,000 enrolled students. Reaching 1,000,000 views would generate a monthly check from YouTube. This translates to the improvement and maintenance of high quality standards, as well as a great deal of promotion for CUNY as a public institution. More income would, in turn, enable more videos to be produced, covering a wide array of texts used in classics courses. And with CUNY’s name vouching for the quality of the series, all Anglophone internet users interested in an introduction to the classics could make use of this resource. Its inclusive nature contributes to the mission of the CUNY Graduate Center while promoting CUNY scholarship and showcasing the skills of experienced staff highly trained in the media realm.
